WASHINGTON, Aug. 6, 2009 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today encouraged Americans to connect with the land, the food it grows and their local communities by proclaiming August 23-29, National Community Gardening Week.

Mary, my wife, is walking in the Komen 3-Day, 60-Mile breast Cancer Walk again this year. 60 miles in 3 days is a long walk, but the cure for breast cancer is still a long way off. Every step taken by the thousands of people who take part in this event brings us that much closer to a cure.
Walkers camp out between days spent walking, hearing stories, both inspirational and heartbreaking, supporting each other, and sharing a common goal.
This is Mary’s 6th year of participating in this powerful event. I get a huge rush out of helping, and all I do is set up camp and tents for the walkers. The granddaughters don’t realize it, but it IS all about them, too…
Follow Mary on the walk this year from her facebook page or help support her meeting her goals by making a pledge here
